Moonshots
The full moon is spectacular every month. I was impressed by this foreign world already as a child. Luckily, I was able to witness when mankind first landed on the moon and the rest of the Apollo landings.
I guess this was also the reason why I started to direct my telescope to the moon once I got it and did the same with my camera to start to shoot the full moon first...
As everyone who tried will most likely agree, the full moon is really hard to capture - especially if you are interested in sharp pictures and details on the moon. I quickly learned to appreciate other moon phases but also worked on my skills to get better with the full moon.
The moon is impressive in all phases - well, not too much when we have new moon, but this is the chance for seeing stars and other planets much clearer.
I have selected several pictures of crescent as well as first and last quarter moons. The pictures were taken at different times, which explains the blue background, the red or golden color or the standard night moon. While the overall picture of the moon is great at any time, the ability to capture details is best near the border of light and shadow.
As you can see, most pictures are barely polished while some I did some extreme polishing - highlighting the details of the craters and the rims to the max. Decide foryourself which ones you like more!
A lunar eclipse is not too rare astronomically but full lunar eclipes and the right weather and sight as well as the right place on the earth to make good pictures are rare.
I was lucky in a few cases (especially July 2018 when I was also able to capture the moon and Mars on one picture, it was a full lunar eclipse) and your can see the results here.
I will continue to hunt for them and add the new results, but it will take time...
While still being fascinated by the moon as the main (honestly only) subject on a picture, I started to get interested in "moon plus" pictures.
I am sure you have seen the wonderful (but sometimes artificially) looking giant moon shots in front of cityscapes or mountains. Well, there is still a long way to go for me, but I managed to get some "interesting" shots myself so far.
There is still a lot of room to grow and improve. Stay tuned for more come...
